Day 20: Nicknames
I have had very few nicknames in my lifetime. In fact, besides being called teasing names, there are only 2 nicknames that I can think of.
The first came about because when I was younger I had a really squeaky voice and I loved to collect little mice figurines. So people started calling me mouse. I remember at one point my niece (who is 11 years younger then me) had started being called little mouse. One particular day she didn’t want to eat spaghetti. She had always loved it, but she started saying she didn’t like it. So we told her that it wasn’t spaghetti, but special mouse food called cookamunga. She immediately started eating it then.
The other nickname was given to me when I was working at the hospital back in the late 80s / early 90s. Having the first name of Norma, I was constantly being called abnormal. This really didn’t bother me too much. Well, one of my coworkers decided that too many people were calling me that and he wanted to come up with something for just him to call me. One of his favorite movies was Young Frankenstein. If you have ever seen the movie, then you probably remember the scene where Igor brings back the brain and is asked about it. He says that the brain is “Abby Normal”. So Joel started calling me Abby for short. It really confused people a lot. Especially since he reminded me of Anthony Perkins, so I would always call him Norman.
And for those of you don’t know which scene I am talking about, here it is. Enjoy!
