Day 8: A place you’ve traveled to
I haven’t had much chance to travel in my life. There are only a few places that I have had the opportunity to visit.
Growing up in South Florida, I made the obligatory trips to Orlando to visit Mickey Mouse. We went there quite a bit when I was much younger.
However, most of my vacations were spent up in Canada. Usually, I would go up with my dad since it was much easier for him to take time off from work.
Whenever I went up with my dad, we would stay on my grandparents’ farm in Castor Centre. Castor Centre, at that time, was a very small farming community. I remember seeing a milkman coming around to deliver their milk and various other dairy products, such as cheese and butter. They also had a meat man that would come around and they could buy various cuts of meat. There was a small store a few miles away that they could buy various items, such as toilet paper and other necessities. Then once a month, they would drive about 45 minutes to go to a real grocery store.
The farmhouse was built in the 1800s. There weren’t that many “modern” conveniences in it. In fact, there wasn’t even a flushing toilet. It had an “outhouse” that was attached to the house. So you didn’t have to go outside. It was a small room with the same type of toilet used in outhouses. I remember being afraid that I was going to fall in.
The house was heated by wood stoves and fireplaces. They also did their cooking on wood stoves. Now please remember that this was in the 1970s and 1980s that I spent my time up there.
To this day, in 2011, the house is exactly the same. It still has the same toilet. It still is heated by wood stoves. My aunt and a cousin still live in this house.
It’s so strange to think that in today’s modern society, people actually still live like this. Neither one of them want to leave the house. They love it.
The house also has a very long history. I would love to find out some of the things that took place on that land. I know when I was younger, my cousin had chopped down a tree and found musket pellets inside of the tree. They have dug up areas and found old arrow heads.
The house may not be up-to-date with all the modern conveniences and it may not be some people’s idea of luxury living. However, to me it was always full of love and happiness. Anytime I went up there, I was surrounded by people that enjoyed living and didn’t feel compelled to work 80 hours a week in order to get the next best gadget out there.
