This wonderful book by Robert Benson breaks down into lay terms the meaning of the Daily Office.
Really simply, the Daily Office is the ritually of daily fixed-hour prayer. According to Psalms 119, we are to rise up and praise His name seven times a day. It was because of this Psalm that ancient Christians devised the Daily Office. They believed that it was important to pray to the Lord seven times a day. These times were daybreak, before the work day began, noon, mid afternoon, sundown, before bed, and midnight.
Robert then takes the time to explain why each of these times are important and what the Christians should be focusing on as they pray and worship in His Name.
I think one thing that is important is for people to understand why they do the practices that they do. This book helps to reconcile todays modern Christian with the thinking of the Ancient practices.
